No right is more precious in a free country than that of having a voice in the election of those who make the laws under which, as good citizens, we must live. Other rights, even the most basic, are illusory if the right to vote is undermined.

Why Shouldn't Obama Win West Virginia?

May 12, 2008 11:25 AM

1.8 million Americans live in West Virginia, 665,234 of them are registered Democrats. It's bordered by two states Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois won -- Virginia and Maryland, and two states Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, won -- Pennsylvania and Ohio. (Its fifth border state, Kentucky, holds its primary on May 20.)

Why is it so crazy to assume that Democrats should vote for Barack Obama?

Because so far, I am not too comfortable with how he seems unable to win big Democratic states - and has relied on winning Republican states based on the Republican vote, in what is apparently some attempt to change the electoral map.

One problem with this is the assumption that today's polling will hold. It won't. Obama is going to be considerably more harmed than McCain is by the media and advertising between June and November.

Another problem, of course, is that all of this suggests that Clinton's voters will fall into line like good little boys and girls*. But when all the facts are laid bare, I am sure it will become increasingly obvious that Clinton's voters are better off with McCain than Obama - and will vote accordingly.

(I mean above and beyond the large percentage that already says it won't vote for Obama.)

This whole election process relies on the upper class speaking on behalf of the lower classes. Those of us who do not want to be permanently disenfranchised from the Democratic party must make our presence felt NOW.

Contact your local superdelegates and find out how they are voting - which candidate do they back? Make sure they know that they will continue to have your support if they are for Hillary - but that failure to support Hillary will result in your active opposition to them as candidates in the future.

We still have a vote. For the moment. We must use it.
