No right is more precious in a free country than that of having a voice in the election of those who make the laws under which, as good citizens, we must live. Other rights, even the most basic, are illusory if the right to vote is undermined.

the problem with identity politics

I wholeheartedly believe in Democratic party goals*.

I wholeheartedly hate the methods that have been used to accomplish those goals.

Democrats seem to not understand that some things in life are irreducibly zero sum. Identity politics falls here, because you cannot privilege one group without it coming on the back of some other group.

Whether it's flattering the egos of affluent Democrats who want desperately to believe that they're smarter than average Americans (which comes at the expense of whose who are the designated un-elite), or minorities being granted special privileges (out of the mistaken belief that reverse discrimination never hurt anyone) - any form of elevating one group must always come at the expense of some other group. It's just like any other form of protectionism.

And those who are forced to carry the load are naturally going to balk sooner or later.

This isn't a minor point - it's the essence of what's gone wrong with the Democratic party.

*Democratic party goals - what was understood before former Republicans Kos and Huff appropriated the right to decide what is/is not Democratic party
